The wreck of the “Old 97” was a rail disaster involving a mail train running at excessive sped through Danville, Virginia in 1903. The train plunged off the trestle, killing eleven people. The wreck inspired a famous ballad released in 1924 that became the first million selling country hit.
This piece includes stones collected from the ravine at the site of the crash.
