George Caleb Bingham focused on paintings of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers celebrating their roles as major arteries of transportation and agents of cultural and economic change. This piece is based on Bingham's painting Fishing on the Mississippi (1851). Each vial contains water collected at the Mississippi with indicators of rising and falling river levels including the Great Flood of 1844.
